Samsung Freezer Not Freezing (Try This Out!)

I didn’t want to miss out on an important TV show, so I decided to enjoy the program with a cold drink.

A few hours had passed and the show was about to start. You won’t believe what happened! The drink I had put in my fridge was exactly the same as it was 4 hours ago.

My Samsung freezer was not freezing! Something was definitely wrong somewhere. 

If your Samsung refrigerator is not working, you should check the temperature settings and reset the compressor. The problem might also be the defroster system or the evaporator fan and coil.

How To Fix Samsung Freezer Not Freezing?

First and foremost, I’ll be highlighting the reasons why this problem usually happens, followed by the way you should approach them one after the other.

Here are the causes of a freezer that’s not working:

1. Electricity isn’t supplied to the refrigerator.

2. Something is wrong with the freezer defrost system.

3. The evaporator fan might be stuck.

4. You should check the freezer door seal too.

5. Reset the compressor.

6. The freezer vents should be unclogged.

Check the power outlet.

The first thing I did was check the power outlet. If there’s an issue here, your freezer won’t receive any power, and it obviously can’t function without that.

It might be one of two things: the outlet itself is either fried or the circuit breaker box is tripped.

Unplug your freezer and check if all is well with the plug. Then proceed to the circuit breaker box to see if it’s correctly flipped and working perfectly.

If all of these are checked, replug your freezer and check if it’s working again. If the Samsung fridge is not cooling but the freezer works fine, then check for other fixes below.

Check the temperature control settings.

The next step is to check the temperature settings. It’s obvious that your freezer is no longer providing cold air, which is the reason why it’s not freezing.

You need to ensure that your refrigerator is at the right temperature.

The ideal temperature settings for a Samsung refrigerator compartments are 2°F and 38°F (in other words: -19°C and 3°C).

Anything higher or lower than this is not normal and might need manual adjustment. 

However, if you notice that your refrigerator temperature is higher than normal, then you should adjust it to the recommended settings above.

Also do well to go through your manual, it might come handy in situations like this.

The door seal might be worn out.

Another thing you need to inspect are the seals along your refrigerator door. Over time, these seals may break down and allow the inflow of warm air.

This could be the reason why your fridge isn’t cooling as it should.

Now, what you need to do is clean the door seal. Sometimes dirt and debris get stuck in these particular areas.

Use a clean cloth with hot water and soap to do this. Next up, you need to know whether you should replace the entire seal or not.

Simply place a dollar bill on the edge of the door seal, then close the door. Try pulling the dollar bill, and if you notice any resistance while doing this, then you don’t need to replace the seal.

But if there was basically no resistance, that means cleaning the door seal isn’t enough and you need to replace the entire seal.

Are the freezer vents free of debris?

You need to check and make sure that the freezer vent is open and there’s no dirt or debris blocking it.

Additionally, when you place food items close to the vents, it results in blocked ventilation, which causes the buildup of warm and humid air in the unit.

Make sure all these are what you’re actually checking in order to ensure proper ventilation.

Next up, check the evaporator fan.

Whether the evaporator fan is stuck, not working properly, or making weird noises, This can adversely affect the proper functioning of your refrigerator.

In other words, the component might not be able to aid in the proper flow of air throughout the freezer.

It’s time to inspect the fan, unplug your freezer, and locate the fan.

Check to see if it’s properly running. Remove any obstacles that might be blocking the blades, then test it again. I’m sure it should work this time.

However, the evaporator motor should be replaced if you notice continuous, loud sounds.

Check the freezer defroster system.

The defrost timer, heater, and thermostat are all part of the defroster system. Perhaps any of these components is faulty or malfunctioning; it could definitely be a reason why your freezer isn’t freezing.

First, let’s start with the thermostat. You need to visually inspect the thermostat to see if it’s either swollen or frayed.

If there are no visible damages, the next step is to test it for continuity with a multimeter. If the readings are inaccurate or nothing at all, It’s recommended that you replace the component.

Otherwise, check the defrost heater and timer to see if the thermostat seems fine.

Depending on your model, you’ll find the heater underneath the evaporator coils at the bottom of the freezer.

Try removing the coils if it’s not working, then test it with a multimeter to see if it gets an electrical signal.

A value between 20 and 40 ohms is ideal. If this is significantly different from your observations, you should consider replacing the defrost heater.

Inspect and reset the compressor.

The compressor can be regarded as a pump that compresses the refrigerant. It also circulates the refrigerant through the evaporator and condenser coils. 

Another reason why your refrigerator isn’t freezing might be because the compressor is not working.

Most times, this rarely occurs. This is why it’s important to check some parts of the compressor before you consider any replacement.

Inspect the compressor by using a multimeter to test the continuity between the electrical pins on the side of the compressor.

However, if there is an open circuit, this is a sign that the compressor is likely defective. I recommend reaching out to an experienced technician to help you replace it.
