How to Eliminate Pet Odors from Your House

As a proud pet owner myself, having pets in the house often come with some less pleasant odors that can linger in our living spaces but we have no choice unless if you’re willing to get rid of your pet.

And I’m sure most pet owners would definitely not go for that option.

If you’re planning on keeping your pets and still wanna stop and prevent the unpleasant smells, continue reading this article.

I’ve picked up a few tricks along the way to keep my home smelling fresh despite my furry friends. Here’s what I’ve found works best.

Tips on how to keep your house smelling good if you’ve got pets

#1. Regular Grooming:

This is the first rule. Keeping your pets clean can significantly reduce odor.

Thing like regular baths, brushing, and grooming sessions helps to remove loose fur and dander, which are major contributors to that “pet smell.”

Think of it like this: Just like how we feel better after a nice shower, our pets do too!

Plus, regular grooming helps prevent mats and tangles in their fur which also makes it easier to keep clean.

2. Wash Pet Bedding Frequently:

  • Save

Pet bedding can absorb odors over time, so make sure to wash it regularly.

You can opt for pet-friendly detergents and use hot water for a thorough clean. Wash all your pet’s bedding 1 – 2 weekly.

Imagine if you slept in the same sheets for weeks without washing them—yikes!

Regularly washing your pet’s bedding helps keep their favorite resting spot smelling fresh. This in return would keep your home smelling nice and fresh.

3. Use Air Purifiers:

  • Save

Another thing i would recommend is to use Air purifiers. Actually, it can help eliminate pet odors and allergens from the air, making your home smell cleaner and fresher.

Consider looking for models with HEPA filters for the best results.

They work silently in the background by constantly filtering out unwanted odors and particles to keep your indoor air quality high.

Additionally, you actually don’t need an air purifier in each room. I don’t think so! It probably would depend on how big your home is.

I’m in an apartment and I have just one in the bedroom. Also, most air purifiers show what size room they’re for on the box. So you can check’ em out!

4. Vacuum and clean floors regularly:

  • Save

Pet hair can get everywhere, and when it starts to accumulate, so do odors.

Invest in a good vacuum cleaner with pet-specific attachments to effectively remove hair from carpets, furniture, and other surfaces.

While doing do the cleaning, don’t forget those hidden spots like under furniture and behind curtains! Most people don’t usually pay attention to these spots.

Just like i mentioned earlier, you should try to get a vacuum cleaner that is designed specifically for pet owners, as they often have features like powerful suction and specialized attachments for removing pet hair.

This works much better than a regular vacuum cleaner.

5. Air out your home:

Opening windows and letting in some fresh air can work wonders for getting rid of lingering pet odors.

Although this might not actually be significant but even just a few minutes of ventilation each day can make a big difference.

If the weather’s nice, let nature do its thing and sweep away those stale smells.

6. Control litter box odors:

If you have a cat as a pet, keeping their litter box clean is essential for keeping your home smelling fresh.

Scoop it out daily and change the litter regularly to prevent odors from building up.

Consider using a litter box with a hood or a top-entry design to help contain odors.

7. Neutralize Odors with Baking Soda:

  • Save

Sprinkling baking soda on carpets, couch and upholstery before vacuuming can help absorb and neutralize odors.

Let it sit for a while before vacuuming it up for maximum effectiveness.

For me the worst smell holder is the fabric couch. I used to use Febreze Fabric Refresher on it but then I noticed it would get on my dog and I would prefer to avoid the chemicals.

So I started putting baking soda on the couch 1-2 times a month over night and then vacuuming it off in the morning.

It removes those smells that get deep in the fabric. It is a lot of work though! There are YouTube videos on how to get it on there really effectively.
